What is Saxenda?
Saxenda® (liraglutide) is an FDA-approved prescription medication for chronic weight management. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, helping you feel full sooner and eat less.
How does Saxenda work?
Saxenda works by mimicking GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone that regulates appetite. It slows gastric emptying and signals the brain to reduce hunger, making it easier to eat less and lose weight. Saxenda is administered as a daily injection.
How do you take Saxenda?
Saxenda is self-administered as a once-daily injection under the skin (subcutaneously) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Your provider will guide you through a dose escalation schedule.
| Week | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 0.6 mg | Once daily |
| Week 2 | 1.2 mg | Once daily |
| Week 3 | 1.8 mg | Once daily |
| Week 4 | 2.4 mg | Once daily |
| Week 5+ | 3.0 mg | Once daily (maintenance) |
Safety info: Saxenda may have serious side effects, including possible thyroid tumors. Do not use if you or your family have a history of a type of thyroid cancer called MTC or MEN 2. Do not use if you are pregnant. See more serious warnings & safety info.
